Machine Robo Series: Ganseki Chōjin
Gobots / Machine  Men / Robo Machine : Rock Lords

First released in Japan as 'Ganseki Chōjin' (Rock Supermen) as part of the 'Machine Robo Series' line
they were quickly added to the US and UK Gobots as well as the Australian Machine Men

Regardless of untraditional alternative modes, they sold well enough to prop up the flagging Tonka Gobots. With Western markets demanding
more 600 Scale Gobots figures and Bandai not having any more to give Tonka the Rock Lords were a timely addition

Figure Variation

Production figure colour variants are limited to Machine Robo Series VS the all other lines. Some Series one weapons saw locale based colour variations
Slimestone and Pulver-Eyes were released in Japan originally aligned to different factions than their later, Western releases

Packaging Variasion

In Japan Machine Robo Series Ganseki Chōjin were issued in small, colourful, cardboard boxes with foam inserts and plastic viewing windows
The US and UK saw the figures sold as Tonka 'Gobots' on traditional cardbacks in blister bubbles
Europe released them as Bandai Gobots, 'A Robo Machine Product' in impressive sized cardboard boxes with large, plastic viewing windows
Released in Australia as part of the Bandai Machine Men line they were packed in the same boxes as in Europe with no mention of Gobots

Licensed Lines:
1986 - 1987 Bandai - Machine Robo Series - Japan
1986 - 1987 Bandai - Gobots 'A Robo Machine Product' - Europe
1986 - 1986 Bandai - Machine Men - Australia

[Character Details] "Revved up and ready to roll!"

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

ROCK SHOT - Evil
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 1 US/CA/UK Tonka 1987
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 1 EU Bandai 1987

[Character Details] "Thrower-arm knocks 'em cold!"

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

Note: Rock Shot's primary action feature involves its left arm being locked back in an over arm throw
position then hurling the attached, black rock catapult style when the left side shoulder button
is pressed. The second action is to wind in the string attached to the black rock when the right
shoulder button is pressed through use of an internal, ratchet locked, spring loaded spool

The prototype (right) most interestingly has a neck which raised the head above the shoulder
buttons. The right hand also has a hole through the fist which may indicate the planned
inclusion of an accessory. This prototype is a lighter yellow than the production model
with the black swirl less prominent

Another prototype (seen on the rear of Action Shock Rock cardbacks) has both the neck,
the hand hole and is also much brighter yellow than the prototype (right) without any black swirl

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

DRAGON STONE - Evil
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 US/CA/UK Tonka 1987 [red/yellow]
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 EU Bandai 1987 [green/light green]

[Character Details] "Makes thing hot for his foes!"

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

Note: Dragon Stone's action feature was to spring open into his robot mode when placing it on the ground
depressed a button on its underside

The prototype main body colour for Dragon Rock was black with no obvious colour variation swirl through it.
The claws matched the gun barrel red/orange colour and the teeth were white like the European release not silver.
The rest of the US production figure matches the prototype colours

BLAST ROCK - Good
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 US/CA/UK Tonka 1987
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 EU Bandai 1987

[Character Details] "Blasts his way through the Baddies!"

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

Note: Blast Rock's action feature was to spring open into his robot mode when placing it on the ground
depressed a button on its underside

The prototype example image has no obvious colour variation swirl through it and the two chrome,
cross hatched
rectangles on each arm were painted yellow.
The whole inside of Blast Rock's arm cavities are chrome, not just the mechanical section as seen on the
production version

The only obvious structural changes to the production version relate to the chrome arm sections.
The prototype did not have screws or screw holes, presumably it was glued together. Trapeziums
close to the body was added to accommodate the screw at that end. At the other end the chrome strut
that connects the vertical outer arm sections was made thicker to accommodate that screw

STUN STONE - Good
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 US/CA/UK Tonka 1987
Gobots Rock Lords (Action) Shock Rocks Series 2 EU Bandai 1987

[Character Details] "Bowls 'em over!"

Figure was not released in Japan or Australia and was not issued with a separate accessory or weapon

Note: Stun Stone's action feature was to spring open into his robot mode when placing it on the ground
depressed a button on its underside

Two prototype versions can be seen in the example, one mostly blue with the other a more varied
dark/light colour scheme (rock mode version)

The prototype showed three pronged hands VS the two in the production version. The prongs were
arranged in a circular fashion, not like a trident and the whole silver arm section was positions to the
outside of the slot. In this position the arm would not have been able to retract when the side doors
were closed. Presumably it was a non-working concept prototype that was photographed for marketing

Rock Lords  Narlies

NARLIES - Series 1 & 2 US/CA/UK/EU/AU Tonka 1986
The Narlies are a little wheel in a body form you push along covered in fluff that makes
a tail andhead crank up and down

Designed by Tonka, there are two series comprised of eight small and one larger, battery powered Narlie.
Oddly there are only two 'Heroic' Narlies and the Series 2 write-up (below) mentions Magmar having a
herd of them; marketing blunder cover-up or plan all along? We'll never know...

They were released in the US, UK, Europe and Australia but not Japan

Series 1 [Heroic: Narlie-Hog & Narlie-Phant] and [Evil: Narlie-Gator & Narlie-Lizard] 6.5 cm
Series 2 [Evil: Narlie-Bat, Narlie-Lion, Narlie-Rhino and Narlie-Baboon] 6.5 cm
Series 2 [Evil: Snarlie-Narlie] Battery Powered giant size Narlie

Series 1 Narlie cardbacks included a clip out 'Collector Card' with a bio on the character and a
photographed scene showing the Narlie range in corporated in play with the earlier Rock Lords figures.
Series 2 saw these elements removed from the cardback place of showing all eight Narlies available
and a the below generic text:

"Narlies are more than just pets ...they're wild Rock animals dreaded by the most fierce Rock warriors.
They share a quick-tempered fierceness that cannot be trusted. The good Narlies live with Boulder
to help during battle with Magmar's evil forces. Magmar uses his herd of pets to secure his conquest of Quartex."

I really want to like these. They're designed well, especially for Tonka in the mid 80s,
I just don't feel they fit with the multi-form theme the rest of the line has
