'It's a robot, its a Walkie Talkie, it's a Space Shuttle'
Toy manufacturer Playtime Products, Inc. created a number of electronic toys for Tonka's Gobots toy line.
While under license and the packaging noting that the trademark Gobots and related character designs are used under agreement, nowhere on the box or instructions is the name, 'Spay-C' used. The walkie talkies were released in 1985 and the character's name was well established by this time making it an odd omission from a marketing perspective.
Spay-C or not, while there's been no attempt to hide the walkie talkie controls or antenna in both forms the robot and shuttle modes are achieved very well.
The most common issue with the units is the white plastic's tendency to yellow surprisingly readily.
Region Codes Used: US United States - Location codes only shown where items were known to be released. This list is accurate yet likely to be incomplete. If you are able to confirm release in other regions please get in contact.
Gobots US Playtime 1985
Each unit requires a 9 volt battery to operate; not included.
There are two common variations, painted and unpainted eyes. Interestingly the packaging shows the unpainted version in the photographs while the artistic rendering has them yellow.
The artists rendering also shows decal or painted wing details and a black talk button. In shuttle mode the American flag is shown the correct way up however in robot mode it's incorrectly orientated. All sighted examples follow this later rotation having the flag stickers applied to the model upside down.
While not yet sighted, a Canadian French/English packaging version was also likely released unless it conflicted with regional radio frequency product regulations.
