Plastic Construction Mini Model Kits
In 1985 Bandai released a series of twelve, no glue required, mini plastic model kits in two series based exactly (or in some cases very closely) on existing Machine Robo Series figures. The models were sold only in Japan and predominantly through Gachapon capsule vending machines as well as a small number of other limited outlets. Each was issued in a number of single colours and both series instruction guides included an image showing hand painted examples. A sticker sheet was not included with the models.
Gachapon / Gashapon is the name given to coin operated, capsule ball dispensing vending machines found most commonly and in huge numbers in Japan. Gachapon is the colloquial name for the machines while Gashapon is the officially licensed name to Bandai Namco. Both names originate from the sounds the machines make when used:
Gasha/Gacha relates to the sound of the crank dial being turned and Pon the sound of the capsule ball falling into the catchment area.
Gachapon in an institution in Japan where the humble toy in capsule ball vending machine has been elevated to a culturally significant level; many other sites explain and explore this in great detail.
