"Machine Robo Sentais' Powerful Transporter"
Jet Garry is a battery powered, motorised robot and vehicle transport vehicle released in Japan by Bandai as part of their Machine Robo toy line.
It was first issued in 1983 (rainbow stripe box) and then again in 1996 (Cronos packaging) to take advantage of the Revenge of Cronos cartoon release.
It's a mixed bag with a heap of play options. At its core, Jet Garry is a 4WD motorised car transporter you can load with vehicle mode Machine Robo 600 Series (or like scale) toys and have it haul them around. The trailer section's tailgate can be lowered as well as the upper deck to allow vehicles to roll down and out. This all works a well and so much so that the trailer section appears to have played a decent part in the design of Big Trailer Robo / Staks Transport.
Then it gets weird. The middle of the upper trailer tray can be dropped away sideways allowing for some figures to stand and be transported. It's only possible if you raise the robots' arms and are happy for them to fall over as soon as the vehicle moves. You could cram more in to hold them upright, however the instructions show only two. The tractor section has fold down wings that justify the 'Jet' in the toy's name. You can attach an additional three vehicle mode 600 Series figures by use of small clips and two different sized rubber bands to the wings and roof. 4cm for the roof and 3cm bands for the wings. It feels as if a lot of ideas came up in development and they ran with all of them leading to a weird thing that's still a lot of fun.
If you have a Machine Robo or Machine Men Battle Base and wondered what that pull-out pron is for, it's to connect to Jet Garry. This too wasn't well considered as the flat cover on the front of the towing point gets in the way of Jet Garry's folded wings when you want to turn.
Jet Garry bears such a close resemblance to General Motors' 1967 concept truck the Bison (images below), that it's fair to say it may have served as inspriation for the design.
Addressing the elephant in the room, is Garry is a mistranslation of 'Carry'? The Japanese text on its packaging reads Jet Garry, however Garry トギャリー is extremely close to Carry トキャリー Only furigana (little marks above Japanese text called kana that indicate pronunciation) separates them. Garry appears a number of times in Japanese toy names in the 80s and 90s and seemingly all relating to carrying / transporting vehicles. Very likely the intention was for the word Carry to be used and it's easy to see how a slight mistranslation may have occured. All that said, the product is (c) Jet Garry.
